Playoff Talk To Begin

October 21st, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Host Talk

With two more weeks left in the Ohio regular season and three remaining in West Virginia, it’s time to take a look at where the Ohio Valley’s teams stand as we head down the stretch toward another exciting postseason.

West Virginia

Class AAA

The West Virginia ratings won’t be released until Tuesday, but the Brooke Bruins will likely remain on the top of the mountain.

After Friday’s 27-20 victory against Morgantown, the Bruins have beaten three straight top-12 teams. Brooke ends the season with three road games – at Weir, John Marshall, and Musselman – before it will likely return home to play host to a first-round contest.

Class AA

Magnolia made the state-title game last season, and with each passing week, looks more and more like it is steamrolling back to Wheeling Island Stadium.

The Blue Eagles are 7-0 and were rated fifth last week. A Ravenswood loss will likely bump Magnolia up at least one more spot.

Oak Glen improved to 5-3 after a victory against Liberty to keep its playoff aspirations going. The Golden Bears face a stiff test the next two weeks at home with defending champion Grafton and at Magnolia.

Class A

Weirton Madonna was in a three-way tie for the top spot with Man and Richwood. All three posted victories this week so it will be interesting to see how that mess unravels.

Wheeling Central will likely move up from eighth after a drubbing of Class AAA-sized Mountain Ridge (Md.).

A victory against Clarksburg Notre Dame has Bishop Donahue at 5-2 with the Bishops hoping to make the playoffs for the first time since 1998. Friday’s game against Valley could be key for the Bishops with Weirton Madonna welcoming them to Jimmy Carey Stadium the following week.

Ohio

Division III

Steubenville sits atop the Region 11 rankings, clinching a home game after posting impressive victories against Massillon Washington and Poland Seminary. Like Magnolia and Weirton Madonna, Big Red is playing some of their best football as they try to make it back to the championship game and finish the job.

Buckeye Local is right behind Big Red at No. 2 and control its own destiny. A road game at Edison and home against Weir, should they win, could have the Panthers in the postseason for the second straight year.

Indian Creek is sitting in the final playoff spot at 4-4 with games against Bellaire and Edison still on tap.

Interestingly, Harrison Central, which pounded Indian Creek 42-13 last weekend and has two more victories, is four spots back at No. 12.

East Liverpool and Edison still have slim hopes.

Division IV

Martins Ferry, winner of seven straight, has clinched a playoff berth in Region 13.

Union Local and St. Clairsville are on the outside looking in at No. 9 and 10, respectively. Union Local plays Harrison Central and Barnesville, while St. Clairsville ends with Steubenville Central and Harrison Central.

Division V

Monroe Central is in the top spot of Region 19. Jay Circosta’s squad has yet to clinch a playoff berth but could likely do so this week with a victory against 6-2 Frontier.

Caldwell dropped a heartbreaker to Fort Frye this weekend to fall to ninth. Victories against Zanesville Rosecrans and Shenandoah could vault the Redskins back into contention.

Fort Frye, on the other hand, will have some work to do to get in from the 12th spot. Barnesville, which lost to Monroe Central this weekend, is in 13th place. Shenandoah is in 15th.

Division VI

Without a victory against a team with a winning record, Bridgeport is in eighth place in Region 23 despite a 7-1 record. After a 54-0 beatdown of Toronto, Shadyside fell from seventh to 10th.

The Tigers and the Bulldogs battle Friday at Fleming Field in what could be an elimination game for the loser.

Frontier (No. 3) and Zanesville Rosecrans (No. 4) are in good position if they win out. Wellsville and Beallsville will have to run the table and get some help.

Mr. Everything

  • Richard Hall, Wheeling Park: Hall bullied his way to 104 yards and two touchdowns against the Potters, and then did his usual damage on defense with 16 tackles.

  • Chance Rowland, Oak Glen: Golden Bears back scored three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving, and recorded nine tackles and an interception.
  • Traeh Keller, Magnolia: Keller recorded 11 tackles, three for a loss. On offense, he filled in for Bates and did his teammate proud, finding the end zone three times.
  • Ryan Lazear, Brooke: Bruins tailback rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns as Brooke defeated Morgantown to remain undefeated. On defense, he was just as solid with 12 tackles and an interception.
  • Dylan Potts, River: Potts’ name was all over the stat sheet, rushing for 90 yards and a touchdown, throwing for 114 yards and a touchdown, and recording a sack to lead the Pilots to their first victory.
  • Tyler Kinchen, Monroe Central: Seminole rushed for 115 yards and a score while also making 12 tackles Friday.

  • Nikko Otto, Justin Wilson, Indian Creek: Otto led the Redskins defense with 16 tackles while Wilson picked up nine and a sack against the Huskies.
  • Kyle Jarrett, Tyler Arigoni, Union Local: Despite making 17 tackles Friday night, Arigoni wasn’t the Jets’ leading tackler. That was Jarrett with 19 and a forced fumble.
  • Austin Coffield, Bishop Donahue: Bishops defensive stalwart recorded 13 tackles, one for a loss against Clarksburg Notre Dame.
  • Dylan Davis, Vince Walker, Oak Glen: Davis led the Oak Glen defense with 13 tackles and a sack, while Walker added 11 tackles.
