Stimulus money funds derelict-net removal
Over the past three months, four full-time boats and dive crews have recovered almost 600 submerged nets, the silent killers of Puget Sound.
The Northwest Straits Derelict Fishing Gear Removal Program received $4.6 million in federal stimulus dollars this summer, with a goal of removing 90 percent of the estimated 4,000 nets by December 2010.
Nets have injured or killed 30,000 birds
