Only a small group of hand-picked AdSense publishers have been given access to a revamped web interface that sports new features, more detailed metrics, and a cleaner appearance.

Google is pitching a re-designed web interface of its engine that powers ads on AdSense-enabled websites. The search company debuted the new interface on a limited basis to a select group of publishers at the Content Revenue Strategies conference in New York City this past Thursday. The revamped web interface is currently in beta status and available to the cherry-picked AdSense publishers in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Japanese. Google promised to increase the scope of testing to “thousands of publishers over the coming weeks.”

Google said the re-designed AdSense web interface packs in daily stats in graphical formats and additional metrics like revenue per ad, targeting, and bid types. It also gives AdSense publishers greater control over the type of ads that appear on their sites.

The Ad Review Center section also features a reworked user interface that enables easier ad filtering and reviewing. The company said the new interface simplifies common tasks like making a change to several ad units simultaneously. Deeper help content, account notice alerts, and a new tips inbox should all reduce the number of support queries, said Google.

Google launched a mobile version of its AdSense program. The move enables ads to be displayed on high-end smartphones just as they would on a PC. The advent of larger smartphone screen sizes and handsets with full HTML browsers capable of displaying larger ads spurred the move, says PC Magazine.

As a result, local iPhone map searches now yield sponsored listings alongside search results. There are still some kinks to be worked out, according to David Martin at CNET News. Martin found that identical searches did not always display the same sponsored links.

Mark Everett Hall of TG Daily calls Google’s latest move laughable and a waste of time for smartphone users. While mobile ads operate under the illusion of providing users with relevant data while on the go, it largely depends on which vendors bid for which words.

According to security researchers, a widely used Google AdSense advertising utility has been targeted by a socially engineered phishing campaign that tries to capture confidential and other personal data for committing identity theft.

The phishing scam against Google AdSense (a famous advertising service) actually based on an e-mail that contains believe phrases and signs generally found in genuine e-mails sent by Google itself.

The reports state that a victim got an e-mail whose caption read “Google AdSense Account Disabled.” This e-mail ‘From’ section gave an impression that it had come from Google. Moreover, it didn’t specify the reasons. The e-mail victim thought that it had been sent by Google because there were a large number of clicks on its website few days back. Google had discovered that abuse and sent this e-mail to inform him.

Besides, the security researchers said that it seemed scammers had copied a genuine e-mail that Google normally sent for notifying users when it disable their accounts or do anything similar. The sender’s address showed adsense-adclicks-noreply@google.com, a genuine e-mail address of Google for contacting its clients.

Moreover, the e-mail’s target field was blank and the text didn’t mention full name just as conventional communications from Google normally did. Furthermore, the e-mail had an attachment named ‘Invalid Clicks Appeal.html,’ which instead of displaying a Google website presented a website on the 110MB.com domain. Eventually, it was at this point where the scammers carried out their phishing.

Describing phishing, security researchers said that it involved the offensive practice of making efforts to obtain sensitive details like credit card numbers, usernames and passwords in the guise of any reliable institution or individual through an electronic mail.

Finally, security researchers advised that e-mail recipients should pay attention to the web-links embedded in e-mails. The best practice demands that the site or service should be accessed through the manual typing of their URLs into the browser’s address bar or via using any of the popular search engines. While it was important to always verify the authenticity of any e-mail, it was especially crucial to make additional scrutiny of e-mails related to AdSense accounts, the researchers added.

I cannot tell you how many sites I find on the web with Google AdSense ads where it is almost impossible to detect the difference between the site’s navigation and the ads. They are so blended together that often the AdSense link units look exactly like the navigation links on the site.

Why is this done? Well, to increase a site’s click through rate and earnings on those ads – to make the company more money with Google. Of course, this is rarely ever helpful to an end user.

Now, people are complaining they are receiving letters from Google about rejections of their sites due to “difficult site navigation.” In my terms, that likely means tricky or deceptive navigation, like in the cases I mentioned above.

A WebmasterWorld thread has discussion around this rejection. Blending ads into your site is a good tip, but taking it too far – just seems bad for your users.

As of this posting, Google is down, Gmail is down, and Adsense is down. Thankfully YouTube, and Blogger are still up. I’m wondering what happened. Did someone hack in to Google.com? It is unlikely for Google to ever go down. Every second they are losing a lot of revenue, and making many people disappointed with their services. A lot of my online activity involves Google, but now that it’s down I actually have to get up and do something else.

If you want to search, I recommend you use Bing. Go to http://www.bing.com and search! Hopefully Google comes back up soon.

Update: Google was only down for Comcast users, but it’s back up now.

Update #2: Google and Gmail services are still down for RCN users.

Update#3: Are you on RCN and still having these issues? Follow the guide below to learn how to fix it. Credit goes to Ben Stewart for this solution!

1. Open your Control Panel.

2. Click on the Network and Sharing Center icon.

3. Find the name of the network you’re connected to, and then click on View status.

4. In the Networking tab click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then click Properties on the bottom-right corner.

5. Select “Use the following DNS server addresses:” and enter in the following:

Preferred DNS server: 207.172.3.16

Alternate DNS server: 208.59.89.21

6. Click OK. Open your web browser, and Google/Gmail and other Google services should now be working. If this doesn’t work then call 800-RING-RCN and get help from RCN Tech Support.

Domain Name Wire has a story with a warning for Google Adsense clients: A well-designed phishing campaign is underway against them. The blogger himself received the e-mail and says it’s the closest he’s ever come to falling for one of these things, partly because it’s really well-done and partly because his circumstances were such that the scam was all the more believable.

The e-mail tells the recipient that their AdSense account is disabled. It doesn’t specify reasons. It uses proper English and seems to be based on an actual e-mail Google uses under these circumstances. The issue with his circumstances was that one of his sites got an unusually large number of clicks the day before, so he thought maybe Google found abuse.

But there were some other tip-offs in the e-mail that it was not right: There was no displayed To: address and no name in the salutation. And it has an attachment named “Invalid Clicks Appeal.html”. The file opens a URL at 110MB.com.

Always be skeptical of e-mail, but e-mails related to important accounts like Adsense deserve extra scrutiny.

Search engine behemoth Google Inc. earlier this week upgraded its AdSense support for high end smartphones like the iPhone 3GS. Publishers would now be able to show up much larger ads on their mobile sites to visitors using smartphones. Previously only small text and image ads could be displayed.

The enhancement helped Google to insert advertisements next to search results, into the iPhone Maps app. Local iPhone map searches will also now show sponsored listings in the view and list modes of the Maps app., such as this search for “Verizon” resulted in the following list view:

Maps app search — “Verizon”

Danielle VanDyke, software engineer for Google, on the company blog said, “With the increasing demand of high-end mobiles combined with full internet browsers, like the iPhone and phones running Android, advertisers are increasingly extending their campaigns to mobile devices. Because these offer a rich content experience similar to the desktop, advertising on them is a natural extension for many advertisers.”

However, it is not always been easy for advertisers to reach people on smartphones, VanDyke wrote. “That is why we are spending more in modern high-end mobile advertising products such as our search ad options for high-end phones and AdSense for mobile applications. We wish to induce advertising on high-end mobile devices as intuitive, effective and user-friendly as our existing AdWords tools.”

Google, in July rolled out new feature for AdSense for Mobile Apps and began serving ads into Android and iPhone apps. However, it received criticism from advertisers and trade bodies for automatically signing up brands to link ads through to online websites rather than mobile-enabled sites.

But now, the fire has been extinguished, so more ads are coming to mobiles via Google Adsense and Google even offers the following video explaining the new advertising technology announced recently.

Yesterday, we reported of wide spread Google AdSense login issues. It seems like after receiving more information from Google on the matter, it might be two separate issues.

One is a standard login issue for some accounts and the other is an issue with accounts that need to be migrated off their original email accounts.

The second issue is known as a “migration loop” issue and there is a Google AdSense Help thread specifically about that, where an AdSense representative shares how to fix the issue for now:

We’re aware of an issue where many AdSense publishers are stuck in a Google Account migration loop when signing into AdSense. We’ve thoroughly researched the issue and wanted to share the details with you so that you can take the appropriate steps.Publishers experiencing this particular issue (getting stuck in an Google Account migration loop) are those whose original AdSense email address *and* password match their existing Google Account email address and password. In other words, if you signed up for AdSense before we asked everyone to update to Google Accounts, and then you later created a Google Account with the *same* email address and password (and haven’t changed the password since), then unfortunately you’re encountering a bug in our Google Accounts migration code.

Fortunately, there’s an immediate solution to this issue. If you’re stuck in this Google Account migration loop, simply visit https://www.google.com/accounts, sign in, and then change your Google Account password to something different than what you’re currently using. In addition to being a good password management practice, you’ll eliminate the migration loop with this change.

We apologize for this issue and are actively working to put in a more permanent solution. Thanks for your patience as we work to resolve this issue.

There are many threads on the topic, and here are some of them.
